In 2005 I wanted to make my own trees since my a buddy of mine just bought some nice metal ones. Well, I couldn’t afford them so I decided to make my own. But of course with wood. Each of the trees that I made were about 5ft tall. But you can make them any size you like.

Base
The first thing I did was to make the base. Two 1x6 were used as the base.(The size of these might be a little smaller than listed). One of the bases center was cut out by using a dremel so that the 2nd piece could fit in-between. So the base looks like a cross or X.

Top piece

A 1x2 piece was used for the top half of the tree. I then screwed this piece into the base with a wood screw. Just make sure at this point that when you put the tree down on the ground, that the tree is flat. Might have to fix the base if it isn’t level. When you get the base on the top piece you can paint it black. Helps it hide in the dark. You can tell by the picture that one of the trees isn’t paint. Wish I had.

Hooks

I then went to the local dollar store and bought tiny hooks. The hooks were then screwed into the base board and top piece, so that I could string the lights on. I did this all around the tree and then strung lights from the top piece to the base, back and forth.

Update: I forgot to say that on one of my trees I made it a little different. I have four wires coming, one for every tip of the base. That comes up to the top of the 1x2 piece. I then strung the wires around the tree instead of going up and down. It seems to look better this way. I then used ties to hold the wire to the light wire.
