We are smack dab in the middle of the best time of the year. Three big holidays for family and friends. Halloween is still fresh on everyone's mind. For most of us it's time to find room for all those new props. LOL Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I can smell the turkey already. And the big one is on the way. I could be talking about Christmas or Santa. LOL

Time to start all those new Christmas decorations. Time to try to find bargains. Time to really think of gifts that will say "I care".

Gotta try to find the time and money and energy to finish my leg lamp this year..... don't know if that will happen. heh

Also nice to see so many people becoming active again on the forum. LOL We knew it would slack around Hallow's Eve as so many Deckers here are also Haunters.

And lots of newbies too...welcome! In case you are really new, this post is just a general day-to-day conversation. Please join in!

I am already trying to do advent calendars...actually just finished up one for a christmas bazar. I took pics, Sikie, if you want them for SP...but I don't have a site to link to. Any ideas?

Trying to think of more "I care" gifts too. You boys are always so hard to shop for. My dad definitly did not like my gift last year, so I wanna do better!

Sickie Ickie

write it up in a document with pics, and I'll host it on the site. :)

What did'ja get Dad last year?

okie dokie...I'll do that asap.

Got him a digital picture frame, but a small, key chain sized one. About a 1.5 inch screen. Although, got the same one for my FIL and he really loved it. So, who knows?

I was just thinking we need a new weekly. And behold today there it is.!. I started with some shopping, not much, but some. My daughter told me to not buy her alot cuz she is moving in the spring to LA, is writing sceen plays and thinks she need to be ther, don't know where that came from, only in the last couple of year, I dont want her to go, but what can I do, she's 29. If she has babies there I will be SO PISSED!She is going to be giving things away so she doesn't have ot lug it or store it, so don't buy much . My thoughts, sadly are WTF!!! I actually pray every day that she changes her mind. It makes me very sad, she better not stay there, damn it!

I'm sorry bethene. I'm a far way off from that with my own kids, but I'm sure I would/will act the same way. We have a tight-knit family and I would be pissed if anyone moved. I know it's silly, but that's just me. :) So I hope she changes her mind too -- if not, then definitly make her get skype!

LOL That's the way love is. It makes you feel like holding somebody tight. If you hold somebody tight enough though, they'll smother. People have to go on a personal conquest of discovery for themselves, sometimes. Besides, one almost always has family. :)

I don't know, I know a guy who lives across the street from his brother. Who lives next door to his sister. Who lives next door to his other brother. AND, the last I heard, there parents were going to buy a house there as well. Right next door. They fill a co-de-sac. Kinda creepy. LOL I live in driving distance from my mom and my x in-laws. It'd drive me crazy if everyone lived within walking distances. But like you I'd be upset if any of them moved away. Just gota let her follow her dreams. Never know, she might be really good at it.

I know, I don't say anything not supportive, but I am not a career person, I am a mom, first and formost, and always wanted to be, and the thought of not being even in the same state breaks my heart. If She goes, but returns to stay at some point, all good, but I so want to be a grandma, I adore children, I want to be a crawl on the floor, tuck into bed grandma, and if I could not be a part of my grandkids lives, cuz I sure can't afford to fly outseveral times a year, which is still not enough in my book, I don't know what I would do. I taught both my kids family is all important, and they saw their grandparents every week, when it got to be just my MIL left , we spent every Sunday with her. So hopefully that will come back when the time comes. The crazy thing is , she never wanted to be a writer, anything, until just recently, she is a brain, and could be a doctor, professer, , but all of sudden is very art driven . which is great, just out of the blue! Oh well, . I just keep praying.

Ack! Just as I'm reading bethene's post about kids growing up too fast...my daughter dropped the bombshell on me. I though I had a few more years yet, but it is looking grim.

"Mom, is Santa, really real?"
Ooooooo, say it ain't so!

How did ya handle it Mums?

Mummy deer-est
11-04-2008, 10:20 AM
well, as best I could. My husband is really into not lieing to the kids, so first I had to throw a stern "don't you talk or I cut you" look at him. Then, I told her that a lot of people don't believe in Santa. But I did, our family does, and a whole lot of other people in the world do to. I told her he was part of Christmas magic. And I reminded her of the scene in the Poloar Express where the boy finally hears the bells ring, but his mom can't. I said if you believe, then he comes, and you are part of that special magic. So I believe.

She seemed to follow that...I think she will "believe" a little while longer. I hope.

Nice job and very quick thinking on your feet! How old is your kid?

Mummy deer-est
11-04-2008, 04:11 PM
Thanks, Sickie. She is 6. But being in school, I guess it is only a matter of time. Plus, she picks up on the small things easily -- like who's handwritting is one the presents from Santa, etc.

On another note....I voted....did everyone else??? :)

putrid
11-04-2008, 04:35 PM
I might be a mean old fart but I can still vote! You bet I did. The best part of this election? It's almost over...no more annoying robot phone calls hopefully recording me not being nice...no more people calling me expecting me to be nice...no more people coming to the door expecting me to be nice....there's a pattern here. LOL

If it wasn't a real dangerest topic ( this would reveal who I supported. politics always start arguments ) I'd let ya'll in on how to deal with political pan handlers. Figured if these folks called me they'd have to expect to get me on the phone. LOL

Yup, I voted! I am glad it's over too putrid!
Mummy, when my kids were little, they believed for longer than alot of their friends, I don 't know if I was more devious and sneaky, or what. I used wrapping paper, bows and tags that were used for nothing but santa, that they never saw before. I also made my writing on the tags different, tried for more "guyish". You did a good job answering your daughter.

Anglo Saxon,
Welsh,
Kings English.....

putrid
11-05-2008, 07:12 PM
I think there was only 2 or 3 states with that amendment, not a nation wide thing. I guess the English language will have to gain support by voters in more states before it become national. LOL

And yes, there were people who voted against it. Perhaps they're holding out for a better one. LOL

Personally, if it was on the ballot, I'd go for one of the Scandinavian languages. Anyone who can put two Rs, two Ds, and two Ts in a single word with only one vowel has my vote! LOL

Figured I'd leave out some of the conversations to keep my pick (votedforobamabutyournotsuposttoreadthat) out of the post. Just to let ya'll know what kind of fun I had,

After receiving 2 robot phone calls early one morning I got a live one. She asked me if I was voting for candidate. I said,

"I've already got two phone calls from this guy today. He's an aggravating son...... What do you think.
Hung up.
(background. I'd get up to 7 phone calls a day for this guy)

Guy came up to the door and asked me if he could put a sign in my front yard. I told him I'd only have to move it when I mowed the lawn. He looked at my 3 duck decoys and back at me. I smiled and slammed the door.

Two women came to the door and aske me if I was going to vote for candidate. I told them,
I couldn't giva ...what you have to say about the guy. I'm voting for him anyway.
shut the door.

Got a live caller that asked me if I was voting republican or democrat. I said,
" I'm an American b....I've vote any way I please."
and hung up on em.

I consider myself an equal opportunity A.H. Didn't matter which candidate was being represented. It's been two days. I'm kinda missing it. LOL

The real reason for the no call list? To protect tele marketers from me. LOL

I actually live next door to my parents. For my husband and I it works out great because our son absolutely loves to visit grandma and grandpa. Our inlaws are about 30 minutes away which is also good for me because we don't agree on things. There are days when I desperately want to move for the space but then I remember how much I love them, and they do so much for my son and I emotionally. I am grateful to have my family close- they have always been supportive of me (even when I didn't make the best choices). It can go either way- just enjoy it while you can, your children will find their way home again (even if it is their hearts)!

And to protecting the telemarketers from Putrid! I was a telemarketer for 1 day while temping. It was freakin' horrible. And we were supposed to be calling from a client list, but oh...the drama. You couldn't pay me enough to go back to that crap job.

Oh, and Kate...you are so right about kids finding their way back. At least that is what I have seen in my family. Both my sister and I strayed pretty darn far, but now we are all back together and I couldn't imagine it any other way.

Omg!! just when I was through having nightmares from freaking gage. he's resurected again. I just saw that movie last month Mummy, and my three yr old has been comming in my room in the middle of the night and stands beside me while I'm sleeping without saying a word. i don't even know how long he's been standing there but I wake up because I get that feeling that someones watching me. and everytime I see him it freaks me out!!!! I ask him "sweetie what is it?" and hes says "Oh nothing" and goes back to bed. wtf!! It's so wierd you mention that movie and now i'm scared and don't want to go to bed till hubby gets home.

Oh my god, Nancj, that would send me over the edge. :shutter:
Least he's not holding a butter knife or anything. :D Sorry to keep you up!

btw...I did a simalar thing the other night. Watched a scary sci fi movie with the clasic scene. The person lying in bed has his wife's had drapped over him, only to see his wife walk in the room and is like "wtf is this then" as the hand pulls back to a freaky polterguist. Well, that night I wake up with my cat all up on my legs, making it really hard to sleep. So I push her off (from under the covers) and then I see the cat, on the other side of the bed. ACK!!! But, it was just my daughter. She comes into my room too, but normally just passes out next to me.

LOL Bethene. Well at least you know the prop works.

Auction was a bust. Never seen so many folks there. The only items I bid on was a set of three styrofoam carolers. The bidding started at $10 and ended at $75. A little over my $20 night limit. LOL Always next week.

Been working on the basement wall and thought I'd share a shot of it. The cleared area is about an hours work with a hammer and chisel What ever the previous owners coated that wall with is murder to get off.

Between bouts with the hammer and chisel I've relaxed a bit by adding a few how-tos to the "Homemade Christmas Props" section of the forum. The first area of wall I did was somewhat easy. The rest? I get about a foot and a half an hour. With a 30 ft wall with 80 feet of cracks it's going to take a bit. LOL Might see if I can take a week off soon so I'll know I'll have this done in time. With deer hunting season opening it may be a few weeks before that'll happen.

Hi guys/gals, haven't been on for a while, but like the bad penny I am, I turn up when you least expect it.

Talking about kids believing in Santa, we sorta shot ourselves in the foot here with our son. He was believing longer than most of the kids in his class, but the day came where he asked "Is Santa real? Mom, I know he isn't, its you and Dad." I explained that if you stopped believing, Santa stopped coming and if he stops coming, people don't think he's real. The logic worked and then, to lock it down I bought the book Flight of the Reindeer.

That book proves that Santa is real, answers how the reindeer fly, how Santa gets up and down chimneys, and includes photos, satellite views of the N. Pole, commentary by aviators, Presidents (real U.S. Presidents) and on and on. Well, my son read the book and was completely convinced. Fast forward about 3 years, now he's in 7th grade. We had naturally assumed that he no longer believed, but as always I dragged out the special paper, wrote To Dean, From Santa with my left hand (I'm a rightie), opened the fireplace screen and spread ashes all over the hearth (we would always make a point of closing the fireplace screen, in front of him on Christmas Eve) and made the ashy footprints on the floor. We had a great Christmas that year and then two days after Christmas, WHAM! He asked the question again. I was shocked, I really had assumed that he no longer believed and was just going along with the tradition. I answered that Santa was a feeling, that Santa is love but is not personafied in physical form. My son was furious "LIAR, MOM YOU LIED TO ME" He was really pissed, totally furious, wouldn't even look me in the eye for days. Talk about feeling like an idiot.

It took a while before he could even speak to me or his Dad about it. He felt humilated, lied to, and was completely embarrassed. It was probably the worst assumption I ever made in my life..ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME. We did work it out with him obviously, but for a while there, Santa was a pretty sore subject around here.

bethene
11-08-2008, 08:36 PM
Carrie, my daughter wasn't mad, but she told me later she felt foolish and embarrassed cuz she believed longer that most kids, cuz mom is good at being devious, I did feel bad after that. If she has kids we will see how she handles it. My son didn't believe quite as long, maybe being the 2nd kid helped that along, although his sister never told, she kept with the spirit of it ,

Totally cool!!! Not only has Larry opened a new section on the forum but he moved posts to it!!!! Now folks take show pics and talk about there home made stuff on one section and tell how it's done in another. Totally cool. Thanks Larry!

From the pic above I've gotten all the way down the side to the right. And all the way to the first line of water seepage on the other. It's still taking about an hour and a half of chiseling a foot. All in all about 7 hours worth. I've tried a sander with no luck. Wire brushes are only good to clean up after the chiseling. I work at it for an hour or so then go rest. At my age it's the best I can do. Actually I'm lazy and just want to blame it on age....LOL

Unfortunately I don't remember much about my childhood so I can't say how my brother and I took the news. Never had kids so this is something that I've never had to do. But from what ya'll are saying it's clear that despite there not being an 'owner's manual' when it come to kids ya'll are doing a great job!

Thinking of taking some time off from chiseling and going to look for a few new ornaments today. Go to places like Dillard's and Pier One. I think last year was the first year I didn't buy an ornament or two from Dillard's. Didn't have anything I liked. Guess I'll call my mom and see if she wants to go. Be up in her neck of the woods. I'll call her and say,
"Let's go scare some rich people".
LOL

sounds fun, Putrid, and it's a sweet thing to take your mom (coming from a mom, who loves to have her kids pick her up and go places with them). I have so many oranments, it is sometimes hard to find new ones I like, but Hobby Lobby has some I like this year, I don't have a dillards by me, but do have a Pier 1, last year I didn't care for theirs for some reason, I have a couple of local stores that usually has nice ones, haven't been there yet , will soon.

Carrie, I don't mention it very much, but I was one of those kids who felt betrayed. I definitely added to me having a hard time trusting anyone.

Well, I went, I saw and I left behind it all. LOL Allot of nice stuff but this year way out of my wallet's reach. Went to Sears and Macy's too. Same story. Checked out the LED Christmas lights at Lowe's. Totally cool that they've come out with ones that don't have that florescent blue look to the whites. But at $10+ a pop it's something else that will have to wait.

Totally cool to see all the new members here. I can remember years ago when the Halloween forum was all on one page. Maybe 10 members posting all year long. Be cool to see this site hit numbers like at the Halloween forum.

Apparently I have not learned much from 61 years of mistakes. When the kids were young I was "recruited" into being a little league coach, soccer coach, Cub Master, Scout Master, Big Brother, and on and on always falling for the line "but nobody else will do it". These were in addition to many years of working 2 full time jobs. Now that I am retired and moved away to a new town in another state, what's the first damn thing I do? Why volunteer for the Christmas Parade committe, that's what! I spent the entire day burning a CD of background "mood" music to play before the Parade starts. Tomorrow I'll spend the whole day restoring the Town sign for the parade. Then there is a meeting tomorrow night to decide when the rest of the work days will be. I still have unpacking to do, what the heck was I thinking? Maybe I actually enjoy doing all this crap. Yea, that must be it, nobody could be this dumb...

Mummy deer-est. I used to get the Better Homes and Gardens Santa issues all the time. But when they started repeating a lot of the collections and artists I stopped. It was some of the Santas in those mags that inspired me to start making them.

Still Hoping to get a week off soon so I'll get all this basement stuff out of the way. Then it's time to deck!!! Don't know if I'll be able to get all the blow molds in the front yard this year. Well that was a short work in the basement. Got more hammer and chiseling done. Decided to work on dry wall removal. That's fun by the way. Nothing like taking a hammer to a wall. LOL Was still wearing the dust mask. My glasses slipped off and hit the downed drywall. Broke em again. Second time in a few weeks I got more glue holding them together than most folks use for crafts. LOL Hoping to get the first week of Dec off from work. Think I'll spend some of that time getting new glasses. Or finding a way to glue these to my head. I'm now wearing them right now so this is hard to see. If one hand or the other has strayed off the right keys just translate. LOL

This will be the third day in a row I haven't done anything in the basement. Guess after breaking my glasses the last time I have 'glasses shock'. LOL I'm at a point where I need to find a way to get rid of all this drywall. I thought about dumping it in one neighbors driveway....JK LOL Or I could take it up in batches at night. Light me a lantern and dig holes in the dark to burry it. That'll keep my neighbors up ALL night. LOL I'll figure something out.

Nope, didn't make it. Having mechanical problems at work on one machine. Having to go to some extreme measures to get things on that machine to work. These extreme measures will eventually cause 3 machines to break down. Someday someone will have to write a book or make a movie on the intelligence of management. LOL

And speaking of management intelligence I'm going to learn a new machine next week. Part of operating this thing calls for moving large ( 18 ft long by 14 to 16 ft tall ) wheeled frames of glass with a hand operated tow motor. I've worked there for 14 years. In all those years they've never asked me to move or operate any tow motors because I only see well out of one eye. Not good depth perception. How much ya wanna bet they'll through a fit when I refuse to move the glass. LOL This should be fun.

Finally got all the blowmolds screwed to there wood bases. When I get home from work tomorrow I'll be cooking for Thanksgiving. I'm going to make something I've never made before. Green bean casserole. And I'll even do my best to follow the directions. LOL I'll keep the Italian influence out of this one. No oregano and toasted almonds. ( which by the way is really good in green beans. Sprinkled with a bit of parmassian.) A few pies and some veggies and I'll be done for the night.

Just be me and my mom. Kinda a small Thanksgiving but it'll be a good one. No new Harry Potter movie out. Every time one comes out my mom wants to see it. She doesn't want to go alone so I take her. If the same guy keeps playing the main part o'l Potter will be a 35 year old gray haird 8 year old wizard. LOL

Did anyone catch the new Star Trek movie previews? Looks like the crew is all 18 or younger. So we got the original Star Trek. Morality plays mix in with sex and the hope of a better future. The Next Generation. Man kinds struggle with that better future. All it's spin offs with predictable plot lines. Enterprise which seeked to undermined all the 'firsts' of the original hitting a bad note with Trekies everywhere. And now Star Trek kids. Lets see how close to puberty we can get the crew. It's over Hollywood. Give it a rest.

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) was appearing naked as an actor in “Equus,” a play written by Peter Shaffer. It took place on the East End London Stage in 2007, and co-starred Richard Griffiths, who played Vernon Dursley, in the “Potter” series.

I'm guessing this held up the movie schedule some.

Got all the cooking done. Even got the aluminum tree up in the computer room. Now it's time to relax till Friday. Going to my moms tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Friday I'm putting up my very first small blowmold yard display. Not going anywhere near a store. Besides I got all my Christmas shopping done. Saturday I'm starting again in the basement. I've got two outlets and one section of ductwork to move before I can tear down the two walls. Really looking forward to having a dry, non collapsing basement.

If I don't get the chance to talk to ya'll before Friday ya'll have a great Thanksgiving!

Bleach my hair?!! I could see me walking in to Wal marts like that. Folks think I'm crazy as it is. LOL Believe it or not I have enough problems looking like I do this time of year. Parents tend to freak out when there kids smile and wave at me. Even worst is when kids walk up to me and start telling me what they want. Look closer to Hagrid than I do Santa. LOL

Scored a few things at the auction tonight. Spent $7.00.

1 6 1/2 ft smoky mountain pine artificial tree. Lighter in color than the trees I have.
3 different tree stands. One made for a real tree, one metal stand and one plastic.
2 plastic wreaths around 14 inches each
Very thick silver garland. Don't know how many feet yet. Need to untangle all the strands.
1 broken strand of holly garland with red felt covered bells.
1 framed old lithograph.
A canister set with owls on them. 2 owls on each piece. Every owl is different. Got that for my mom. She's into owls.
3 strands of mini mulity color lights.
1 strand of white.
A few odds and ends I'll use to make wreaths with. Including one 12 inch plastic holly wreath in poor shape.

I haven't put the tree together to see if it's all there. Be pulling a lot of tincel off of it before I'll use it. Now to find a place to use it....LOL

Tomorrow I'll have to put all the decking on hold. Hoping to get the basement done in a few days. Still need to get new glasses and an iMac.

If you pester her to stay she will be more determined to go. If you stay laid back about it, the more likely she will get homesick and return.

Scored a few things at the auction tonight.

Hope that is a really big basement.

I know what a blow mold is. Why do you want one?

putrid
11-29-2008, 08:31 AM
..............I know what a blow mold is. Why do you want one?

Because I have a lot of room left in the front yard!
Because I have an attic with room!
Because they've come out with energy saving light bulbs and I can get more with out throwing the one breaker for that 1/2 of the house!
Because my neighbors think I'm nuts. Why should I let them down? LOL

The ultimate find would be the entire Nativity set. Even if I had to refinish every piece. I'd find a way to get it all on the roof.

The tree is all there. Spent some time with a hair brush getting the tinsel out of it. It measures 6 ft tall by a bit over 4 ft wide. Nice looking tree. The silver tinsel garland is two 22+ ft strands and is a real thick 1 1/2. Almost rope like. I'm thinking about putting this tree on a box to give it a bit more height and using it for the main tree. That way if everyone does deck at work I can use the same tree I did last year. It's already got ornaments and lights wired to it.

Yes I changed my avitar. This one's not as me looking. LOL

Sometimes I can be dense. I do know what a blow mold is from a manufacturing point of view. I didn't know that is what you call those plastic Christmas decorations. Now it makes sense. Kinda. You really do have to have a lot of room to store them. Unless of course, you just leave them up all year.

So is there a name for those things you can hang on the wall that you get at the dollar store. It'll be like a Santa and hollow in the back with some depth on the front. They don't make them as nice as they used to. But I really like them. It is a challenge to keep them from year to year without ruining them.

Nay not dense LeeLee. Any 3 dimensional plastic object using heat, air and a mold is a blowmold. Be kinda funny to fill my front yard full of milk jugs....or something I'd do just for fun. LOL

Cool pic LeeLee. Dig the old ornaments. Mine will have more plastic ornaments and things from around the 50's and 60's. Just a hand full of glass ones.

Let's see. I go threw 2 to 3 gal. of milk a week. 52 weeks a year. Even at 2.5 a week that'll get me around 130 jugs or more if I start saving now for next year.....LOL

LeeLee
11-29-2008, 09:05 PM
I forget who scored the 300 plastic balls the other day but maybe you can strike a deal. Cut the bottoms out of your milk cartons and fill them with the balls.

And you can always get more by raiding your neighbor's recycle cans.
