just picked up a last set of small orange cones from dollar tree. Supposed to be 4 in a box, mine had five. LOL I'm thinking these will be great to wrap with lights for small trees.

oooo....I want to get some of those this year and glue all sorts of stuff on em as decorations! Like candies, or ribbon, or puff balls, or feathers (blech!, lol) or all sorts of other red and green things!
I would think a white or green one would be easier to start with though.

krylon makes a plastic paint spray, so no probs there. I didn't think of a feather tree with these.

The dollar tree near me sucks. They never have anything I want....but there is one about 20 minutes from me that is huge and probably has those. Now, is it worth the gas, seeing as how I'm never in that neck of the woods?? hmmmm....

Cool score Sickie Ickie. Always good to get an extra bargain! What is the size of the cones?

Really 12 inches isn't a bad height. If your planning on using one of them in a center piece you really wouldn't need it much taller than that. Gluing on items like poinsettias or holly berry clusters will give the cone a bit more height and fullness. Be cool to here what you do with them.

Got an idea for ya Sickie Ickie that might work if your needing larger cones. Try covering one with cardboard held together with glue and tape. Wrapping the plastic cone first with aluminum foil will make it easier to remove the cone. Take the plastic cone out and then extend the height of the cardboard cone by wrapping a larger piece of cardboard over it. Say a piece of poster board. Then add cardboard to the now lengthened part to help make it stronger. Add a lot. You can never have enough support. Best if you cover the entire cone with more layers. You could add 6 to 8 inches to it easily. Paper mache over this with a few layers will help smooth out the cone and add more strength.
You may be able to get a good flat base by trying this. First cover the cone with cardboard and then remove the plastic cone as above. Then lay your now cardboard only cone on it's side on the poster board. With a yard stick draw a line from a point above the cardboard cone to the desired height you want to add to the cone by going past the bottom of the cone you have now. Do this for both sides. Measure the distance from both lines at there widest point. Add that same distance plus two inches to both sides so you end up with a triangle 3+ times the width of your original triangle. Do the old pencil and string trick to get your curved line for the bottom of the cone. You don't need to add the poster board all the up to the top of your cone. Really only needs enough to secure it to the cardboard cone and then add length. So don't be concerned if the poster board isn't big enough to make a complete cone from.
Best part is you'll still have 5 cones to play with. Like the one styrofoam cone I have. Made one pine cone tree with it and still have it to make another one.
