Just thought I'd let ya'll know that small plastic Easter eggs make great bodies for birds. As well as the larger ones. Use paper mache to cover. Make the head, wings and tail and paint as needed. Still haven't worked on ways to attach to a tree but I still have all of ya'll ideas to play with.
The tail can also be made with real feathers by forming a small round shoot and drilling threw the plastic. Glue the feathers in place.

I'll sit on it. JK LOL
As with the rest of them, eventually. In case you'd like to start some I can give a run down.
Decide what bird or look you'd like for your bird
Form the head shape for that bird out of bread clay and let dry for a few days. This will be covered with mache so don't go into to much detailing. I use bread clay because it's light in weight when dry.
Sand any bumps or extra plastic off the outside of the plastic egg. Cover with a smooth coat of paper mache. Let dry
Form the neck on the body out of paper mache. Let dry
Mache the head in place.
Cut the wings out of cardboard. ( in flight, landing, next to body) and mache to body. If the wings are to stick out from the body remember to add a tab or cardboard to each wing so you can attach it to the body. Let Dry.
To add indented detailing to the wings and tail coat with a layer of smooth snot ragging and press in the details with a knife. Let dry
Two different tails
1 cut the tail out of cardboard and mache to body as above.
2 if your using feathers or stiff tinsel streamers ( like the old Christmas bird ornaments ) form a short hollow tube out of mache where the tail will be. Let dry. If using feathers you may need more support. For that use a drill bit that will fit inside your mache tube and drill a hole threw the plastic egg on that side of the bird after the mache is dry. Use a thick glue like clear Liquid Nails to secure your tinsel streamers or feathers to the inside of the tube.
Add beak and eyes out of bread clay. Let dry
Paint and detail according to the bird or style you want.
I haven't tried any of the suggestions ya'll gave me for attaching the bird to the tree yet.
Like 100's of other projects this one looks great but doesn't have a finish yet.

I would too! LOL Still haven't gotten any of them finished. Kinda put them on hold till I figured out how I wanted to attach them to the tree.
Thanks Bethene, always liked the look of the glass birds sitting on a Christmas tree.

So I guess the real big easter eggs would make great spiders. Wish I had thought of this during the Easter clearance. LOL Thanks for getting the creative juices flowing.

Well howdy Kennysmi. Welcome to the forum. Never thought about using eggs to make spiders. Totally cool idea. I use the small eggs for the birds. If you didn't have a lot of the really big eggs you could always paper mache over one with a few layers. When it's dry cut it in half. Take the big egg out. Then paper mache the halves back together. That way one big egg would make as many spiders as you need.
Sorry for the delay. Have to give ya'll the birdie as soon as I get back to them. JK LOL Been to busy with other things at the moment. I have a desk drying in the kitchen. Just stained the top and put a fresh coat of urethane on it. Have to re attach the legs on one side. Basement flooded and they sat in the water. Got the home office to paint and still don't have the new computer to put on the desk that's drying in the kitchen. That's ok, I still don't have the paint. LOL
I really hope the birds turn out looking good. I could really use something to turn out better than I planned at the moment. LOL

Im usually in Christmas mode but lately I have been helping out the hubby with Halloween thoughts. Im usually the idea person and he makes it happen. Had Spiders on my mind for a while. Been tying to think more about objects that will do multiple duties and can be used for other holidays.
I cant wait to see the Birds, I just love all the ideas that people have.
