This could lbe used as a Xmas prop type.
I needed yellow string lights for our Packer party this Sunday and I have never seen them. They may have them at the NFL pro shops but I won't pay 15 bucks for a small string of lights SO..with a 100 light clear string...
First I tried yellow glass paint but that wasn't yellow enough .
Then I tried white galss paint and then yellow over that and that wasn't yellow enough.
I then tried white out and yellow glass paint over that but I didn't like the spotty look and it wasn't the yellow I was looking for.
So I'm sitting there and thought Hmm I wonder if a highlighter marker would work and LO and Behold.
It worked, I put 2 coats on waiting inbetween for dry time
here they are

so now I wonder if the other highlighter markers would work too, they come in so many different colors now
It only took about 20 min each total to do both coats , I also turned the lights out to heat dry them.

It sounds good for inside, Lil. :)
I wonder if they'd be water soluble though?

That's totally cool and usful Xsmaslilly! With this technique anyone can customize there lights to any theme they want. Even make your own multy color with 8 or 9 different colors instead of the standard 5. Just a thought, Wondering if you striped them from top to bottom with different colors, Say only two colors a light. And used different color and color combos on each light. Used this outside. When someone drives by would it look like the lights are all randomly changing colors???? Your a genius Xmaslilly!!!!
My goodness, Xmaslilly - you are one creative person!!! Congrats on this project -they look wonderful! Enjoy your party!!

Cool, thanks Lilly. I have orange lights in my non-working fireplace but I have to get spare bulbs/strings at Halloween, now I have an option!

thanks guys ..
I made another string today too but,
I checked the ones I did yesterday and the yellow did come off a bit when you touch the light itself, so just dont touch the light part haha..
I may do a fast drying poly on them and see how that works too.

I hung them up today and I didn't get any yellow from the lights on me so they must be okay now..
heres a pic of them on, there are a couple hot glue G logos hanging too

Those look great for that setting. My mom has yellow xmas lights, probably from years ago, and they are the ugliest thing I've seen when used for xmas decorating..lol!

Thanks P., W., and YS
woodmizer..it should work on the spotlights, but if you want any other color besides yellow, glass paint works good too just do a couple coats. I did a green one last yr and it showed up great..
Yellowsnow..I think it depends on how you use them..you could paint the stem white and make tiny candles for on the tree or use them for yellowcolor in a fireplace..or make a giant star with them also. or for something goofy shape them into a stream or words cover with snowmat for Yellowsnow..LOL

Xmaslilly...love the candle idea but writing MERRY XMAS in the snow with them would be oh so funny since they are the color of pale urine..LOL!

That is a great idea Lilly. Please keep us posted on how the poly works out. I'd assume that since you mentioned the ink came off the bulb when you touched it, you wouldn't recommend this for outdoor use?
