Do you usually head out on the big night or stay in and celebrate?

My wife and I have done both, but for the past few years (actually the past 7) we've stayed home and grilled, hung out and whipped up our own dinner and cocktails.

Last couple of years, I have gone out.
A couple friends invented what has become their annual, No Shirts Allowed party and turns out to be quite fun!

Hubby and I always stay in. In fact, he usually has to wake me up to kiss me Happy New Year :)

I was a musician for many years and always worked New Years Eve as do most. I always refered to it as "Amateur Night" when too many people drink as much as they possibly can and act as stupid as they possibly can, and then go get into cars and drive. We stay home. And Candycane, when Chuck wakes you up, give us a call and wake us up.

We always go to my parents (along with sisters family and any other friends or family that may be available) and do fondue! We love it! Always have cheese and chocoloate fondue, and sometimes even do the meat one. We are straight out of the 70's, cause after that we go outside and bang on pots and pans like we did as kids. Lots of fun!

We stay home and have our friends over. It's the one time of the year when I drink to excess. Anyone who has been drinking stays the night or has a designated driver. We eat, drink and try to play games like Catch Phrase, pictionary, password etc.. The later in the night it gets the funnier the games get. We end up laughing so hard we can't breathe. The kids think it's great fun to watch the grown ups getting silly. At midnight we all go outside and make noise, pass around the new years kisses, the kids save sparklers from the 4th of July to light. Then we go in and everybody is pretty much done for the night.

We've done both, although I prefer to stay in.

In England, we used to get together with various friends for dinner...

Since moving back to the US in 2004, we've gone to my cousin's house and stayed the night. Although, last year we bowed out because my FIL was ill and we were hanging tight.

This year, we'll be at home again since my MIL is visiting for three weeks over the holidays. I may invite a few neighbors around, but we'll see closer to the time.

Stay in. Our home was broken into on New Year's Eve years ago and we can't help but think of that if we go out. Besides, I can't handle my liquor like I could as a youngster so I might as well be comfy in my PJs, safe in my own home.

I would love for once to get decked to the nines and go out someplace fancy! But since that would never happen - I would prefer to stay at home, have a few friends over and have a few drinks, play some games or watch some movies..but since that will never happen -( I am not a big drinker or partier - hubby- well thats all he wants to do )- So I usually say okay-you go to the party and I will stay home with the kids and enjoy a nice peaceful eveing and watch some movies with the kiddies and chill in my pjs!

We usually stay home just the two of us. Hubby makes a fabulous meal and we take all night eating and drinking champagne. And well, doing other stuff too. ;)
But this year he has to work. I have no idea what I'm going to do. What does one do on New Years eve when they are husbandless and pregnant? LOL

Around most holidays, I spend them at Universal Studios. So this new year and the many before it will be sitting in the theme park on the lagoon watching the gigantic array of fireworks.... and then of course a mad dash to the Hulk coaster while the wait is still 5 minutes. :D

Our friends have set up a tradition now that we go out. There is about 10 of us that go to McCormicks and Smits. Last year we got a champaign box from the manager worth over $150 to the table. There were only 6 of us there at the time but, we started in on that. lol Between the hubby and me we spend about $250 for the night between the appetizers and seafood. YUM! Since we are getting up there in age we are home by midnight. I don't like the amateur drinkers.

11-12-2008, 06:58 AM
We usually have a steak and crab leg dinner at home and then head over to the local bar around 11. The bar is only 2 miles from the house so we're able to avoid most of the crazies out there on the roads.

Wifeypoo and I used to go out and party like rock stars, but now we stay home with the kids, and I'm usually the only one awake watching the New Years Rockin Eve.

Being in the hot and arid SoCal there are no fireworks, so it's pretty quiet. When I was stationed in Hawaii, we got fireworks from WalMart and lit them in the street, keeping the neighbors up. The biggest one I ever had was many years ago in Manila, Philippines. The fireworks started about 10pm and went until 2am.

Forgot to add, about 12 years ago we put together a time capsule made from sheet metal ducting. We did some kids art, made a VHS recording, sang some songs, and put predictions for what will be happing in that year. We can't open it until 2035, so we lug it around as we move.

Around 25. :) Kidding...

If I slid the beads on my abacus correctly, I'll be 72 (45 now). I planned on having lots of grandkids around me by then, big family reunion with everyone ooh-ing and ahh-ing the treasures from the past and goofy stuff.

That reminds me, I better put a VHS player in a box and save it, as that technology will be ancient and nearly forgotten by 2035.

Things I expect to hear from grandkids in 2035:
- What's a keyboard?
- You actually had to download things?
- Sorry we're late, we ran out of recyclables to power the car.
- I think I remember BluRay.

Okay I am young- in my early 30's. Sometime I sit back and think about how far technology (or how fast) has advanced. It kind of freaks me out! I remember 8 tracks, walkmans, life before HD and BlueRay and so on. We watched Wall-E the other day, and it really helped put things into perspective for me. I can't believe how lazy we are becoming as a race. 2035 is right around the corner!

Nancj
12-09-2008, 03:37 PM
So true, technology was supposed to make our lives at lot easier. So why am I always behind on things and I still can't figure what to make for dinner.

Who is 'Iolaus' and what thread are referring to? And if this is only your second post on this forum who are you talking to? Be nice if we all got to know you before you make a comment claiming to have been a contributing member of this forum.

For those of ya'll that are visitors everyone here hopes that sometime you'll join it.

I don't like posting like that because it makes the forum sound clannish. Really would rather talk directly to the member about the post. Folks who visit this forum would read this thread and think we comment back and forth about members. We don't. This has always been a great place for folks to join and not put up with opposing groups For folks reading this there is no one on the member list named Iolaus. Personally I'm thinking this post was accidently posted here and was meant for a different forum all together.

Since we don't drink, it is too cold and Snowy to go anywhere, no one ever visits during the Winter anyhow, other than the Land Lady for the Rent Check, or the occassional Delivery person, the Trash Truck and the like, we just stay in and go to bed early.
Only thing we drink on that night is Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider.

We always try to go out with our friends and we try to make it an event.
Last year we rented a cabin in the mountain, and 2 years ago we took our rvs and other toys to the desert and had a bonfire.

My sister and her family are in town from Missouri. We're getting together at my brother's house about 20 miles away form me. Also, my Dad's widow will be there. We'll go and spend the afternoon with them, but we'll leave early evening to get home before the crazies are too abundant. The 3 of us will be together in our home for midnight.

Not only do we Never go out on New Year's for Reason Stated above, but also, we stay at home, get our Toasting Glasses out and get a Bottle of Martinelli's Sparkling Cider (Non Alcoholic) out and Toast to the New Year.
It is safer, quieter and we get to comfort our Kitty, who is Terrified of the Non Stop Firecrackers and Gunfire that surrounding Neighbors fire off all night.
We just Pray a Dome of White Light Protection over our Home, so Nothing hits us or is deflected, at very least.
We also stay well away from doors and windows, with Locked Deadbolts on the Doors and the Windows Locked, just in case.
It is sad that even out here in the Country, we have to be so afraid, but that I guess, is the modern way of things.

Craig
08-27-2010, 09:31 PM
We are never afraid, but we DO make the effort to care for our animals any time there are fireworks. There is always an underlining measure of joy in our celebrations.

We always stay in. I am just too lazy and tired to stay out that late (also referred to as being old). The few times in the past I went out I was so bored...But mostly I don't like driving around with the drunks.

Our cats get a little nervous with the fireworks but not much as they are use to the noise from the Blue Angels flying over our house every day. Our dog use to LOVE fireworks and would get very excited and wanted to go outside and watch them. If we shot off FWs he HAD to be right there with us. Now he watches them from above.

Tanta...I hope one year you will get your wish and have a nice night out for New Year's.

ROTF... I'm old too. We usually stay in. Back in the day however... we always went out so it's not like we never went out before. I would rather not be on the roads. A few years back we help a party for about 15 close friends which was a great amount of people for our house without feeling over crowded. We supplied the beer and wine and I made a few dished then one person brought fireworks, another brought the champagne and everyone else brought a dish or a desset so it wasn't breaking the bank for us which was nice.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and wanted us to host the event every year but last year we went up north to visit family. I considered hosting again this year but we have home repairs that need to be taken care of first and I don't think I'll get everything done by new years.

Thanks guys:) It's a blast, and pretty low maintenance. Last year was the simplest and was a hit. Nothing more than music, disco lights, a pool table, and a table of appetizers and drinks. The key was to put out only small portions of food at a time. That way, I had an unending excuse to keep coming back on short intervals to restock the food/drink, but they still feel like it's entirely their party. oh, and we also suspended balloons and confetti along the width of the ceiling that the kids got to pull down at New Years.

I like to go to house parties or sleepovers on New Year's Eve. I'm not into the clubbing scene for NYE, if only because of how expensive everything is that night, difficulty in finding a cab, and the crowds. I prefer intimate settings with a few loved ones when kicking off the new year.
