View Full Version : What comes after DVD and CDs?

Most of my Christmas music is on CD now and movies on DVDs. These replaced cassettes (which replaced 8-track, etc.) and VHS (which replaced Beta, etc.)
My constant wonder is what is coming next after CD and DVD????
Anyone want to venture a guess?
Any technogeeks?

I agree with Santa Paws. It's definitely going to be small. You can already use mini SDs to download things.

My Uncle who works for JPL told me a few years ago that the next "new" technology would involve some sort of 3D storage device. His example at the time was a sort of cube that would store a huge amount of information due to it's ability to be ready 3 dimensionally. Of course I'm still waiting... I'd say high capacity solid state media like a flash drive or SD cards are where we are moving to since with no moving parts it's a safe and reliable form of storage for whatever you pretty much wanted.

Well for movies, Blu-ray is kickin' the behind of HD DVD.. We have been keeping an eye on the sales. We also own the PS3 which is the most affordable way to get a Blu-ray player and game console in one. With Blu-ray you get more space on the disc so they don't have to compress the video or sound so everything looks amazing and sounds amazing as well. My husband and I are full supporters of Blu-ray.

Wow. I never realized what the difference with Blu-ray was. I think I'll eventually go that route, only if the popularity picks up. I hate to buy the Blu-ray DVDs and then 5 years down the road not be able to find a new player if I needed one.

I suppose technology is good. But I've had records, audio tape, cassettes, βeta, VHS, CDs, and DVDs. All of my collections in the older formats are virtually useless. I guess my vision and hearing aren't that good, but a record or cassette in good condition sounds fine and a movie on βeta or VHS is very acceptable. My 31 inch CRT TV looks good. It's not only expensive to keep replacing my collections but also a pain in the butt. Blu-ray might be incredible, but Terminator 2 on VHS was awesome. It might be better in one of the newer or future formats, but if I never experience one of them, I will never know the difference.

I've been seeing in a lot of magazines, turntables(LP) that have a USB cable out, plugs right into the USB socket on ur desktop or laptop computer, drop an 'ol Blue Eyes LP on it, hit the switch and Frankie's saved digitally! Next stop, .mp3! Same thing for cassettes(and like anyone still admits to having any) ..8-tracks.. VHS converters have been out for a while, from VHS straight to DVD disk with the push of a dub button! So dust off your Carousel, Sound Of Music soundtrack, The Lettermen Sing Christmas, or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road LP and get'em digitized!!

See, now I just can't say goodbye to that first tape in my stash that says on the front "My first Mix tape!" Or the ones where we recorded songs and pretended to be the DJs. Hillarious. I'll probably keep them forever, even if I have nothing to play them on...which come to think of it, do I even have that stereo now?! Ha! That is funny!

It's probably going to be a mini robot where you would just use an remote controll to make it work. It will be like tevo where you can pause and record it only you'll get the choice of what you'll want to see and here at anytime you want.

I agree with skygodtj. A bio engineered sphere with the interface being the entire outside surface. The unit would be powered by the same sugars the body uses as fuel. To keep reality and what's being played in your head separate you would ware a device that receives magnetic pulses from the implant. To keep the body from rejecting the device it would be grown geneticlly from your own cells.

I've been doing some research. According to the most recent article on yahoo, here's some snipets:
"There are some differences between the formats. Blu-ray discs can hold more data — 50 gigabytes compared with HD DVD's 30 GB — but the technology's new manufacturing techniques boosted initial costs.
HD DVDs, on the other hand, are essentially DVDs on steroids, meaning movie studios can turn to existing assembly lines to produce them in mass.
Warner Bros. Entertainment said Friday it will release movie discs only in the Blu-ray format, becoming the latest studio to reject the rival HD DVD technology
It is the fifth studio to back Blu-ray, developed by Sony Corp. Only two support the HD DVD format, developed by Toshiba Corp.
Studios and retailers have been choosing sides in the high-def format war in recent months.
Blu-ray got a big boost in June when Blockbuster Inc. announced it would stock only Blu-ray titles as it expands its high-definition offerings.
Target Inc., the nation's second-largest retailer, decided in July to sell only Blu-ray DVD players.
Among the other major studios that have decided to go with Blu-ray: The Walt Disney Co., Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures, News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Viacom's Paramount Pictures, which also owns DreamWorks SKG, dropped its support for Blu-ray and said it would start distributing films exclusively in the HD DVD format. "
Well, to me it looks as if HD-DVD is going the way of beta. It looks like Blu-ray DVD has the backing of the most influential studios and majority of carriers.

I would be more interested in noise canceling technology so I could silence that $300 piece of crap car next to me with the 10,000 watt sound system that thinks I want to listen to the crap he is playing that sounds like an elephant farting.
And I still play my vinyl.

Am I the only one who HATES DVDs? I have yet to watch a movie and not have it skip or worse just freeze up and refuse to finish playing. With VHS I can at least actually see where the bad part is and fix it or fast forward. I had to give up renting movies long ago and really don't want to buy them since I only watch them once. CDs and gaming disk aren't much better and I for one can't wait until they are all phased out!

I heard it may be the player itself but I have more than one and still have problems. I have seen a few people mention this but it seems the public is just willing to accept it, kind of like when their satalites go out during rain/snow. I guess I just expect more from what is "supposed" to be new and improved technology : )
I too am not found of DVD's or CD's - I am old school and prefer VHS and cassete tapes!!

You might want to be sure you do good upkeep with those older machines. They're getting about impossible to buy any longer, and it won't be long before repair shops won't know how to handle them either. Not to mention it isn't cost effective to repair something like a VCR that only cost $40.00 in the first place. I still have a dual cassette deck, but I've found that finding anyone who would ever be able to fix it is impossible in a small town like ours. I totally agree with you about replacing older equipment, but I think eventually we're going to have to.
I had an online friend who is in the electronics industry tell me once what was next, but I can't remember what he said. And I've lost touch with him online or I'd email him and ask.

I was spring cleaning and found a Beta Max Machine. OMG, I thought that thing went in the trash a long time ago. It still works, but what the heck would I do with it, short of being a boat anchor.

I have a suggestion. I have a sizable βeta collection including my oldest son's first two birthday parties. I could use a boat anchor. How much?

Cheap! (like 15.00, so I can buy junk on ebay, I thought about throwing it on ebay, but can't be bothered at this point, but if you prefer to do it through ebay, I can do it) Course you would have to pay shipping, not sure what that would be. I can take pics of it so you can see if you are seriously interested in this beautiful anchor thats silver in color. LOL
