View Full Version : Animated deer motor

I just bought Walgreen's $20 animated deer and removed the motor.

Guys, that thing has the most torque out of any deer motor I have seen!!!

I'm actually thinking about going back and buying some more. It'll be cheaper than a wiper motor, and comes set up already so no rigging or adapters are needed for the power!

Is it the same motor as the replacement deer motors you can buy online for $8.99? http://www.britestar.com/products.ASP?PID=7567&SID=3600005

Nope. This one is a circle with the metel arm coming out of the middle of it.

Not familier with the torque on teh one you posted.

Hey Loving -
Have you purchased the motor you linked to? Any idea how well it works?

I'm interested in knowing, too.

I bought one to replace the motor on one of my deer, I haven't received it yet, just ordered it earlier this week. Will let you know how well it works when I get it and hook it up.

I may have to look into one or two of those deer. Maybe after Christmas clearance.

I've been using the circular motors for Halloween/Christmas props for over 2 years now - wish I could find the motor by itself as my sister-in-law may soon be tired of me giving her new deer every year (without the motors, of course).

Just created a skating penguin ice pond for the wife with one of the circular motors. The replacement motor Loving linked to looks to be the same as one I have and is difficult to change due to the linkage/crank being held on with a small screw into the top of the shaft coming out of the motor (actually, the motor Loving linked to may be different - hard to tell even after blowing the picture up larger).

The circular motor has a shaft with a hole through it (which allows different ways of connecting cranks)

You can look at pictures of the circular motor at penguin-motor-set-up (http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc162/hunters-moon/Christmas/Christmas-past/penguin-motor-set-up/) (which has the original set up straight off the deer) and the penguins on ice at
penguins-on-ice (http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc162/hunters-moon/Christmas/2007/penguins-on-ice/) (which is modified).

Ok I took a nap and missed something again. where is the finished pic?
I would like to see the little guy.. And do you think this motor would work in a Halloween grave digger prop? for his waist action?

Sickie Ickie

I think it has enough torque.

Larry makes a good point. We're all family here, so post your invention here and also submit to the project list. :D

In as far as motors go, I've used mirror ball motors in Halloween props that to me are very similar to the deer motors, only black, and are available for under $20 dollars shipped to you ready to go as well. You can find them on ebay in 2-5 rpm models and if they can hold a mirror ball, I'd think they can pretty much handle most typcial props we'd come up with!

Hubby got an awesome deal on an animated buck, doe and angel at Rite Aid yesterday. $5.00 a piece for the deer and $10.00 for the angel. Now I'm debating if I want to remove the motors for Halloween projects or leave them as they are and make costumes for them for Halloween. I'm thinking hounds of hell for the deer and a demon or bat for the angel. That way I can use them for both holidays.

Can't go wrong either way you look at it, Clarice. :D

I just got a deer at CVS for $5.00 also. I hope the motor is powerful enough to do something with for a halloween prop, I don't know what yet- I have a mirror ball motor I am not sure what to do with either.

Well, using them for linkages are always neat. :)

The above link is IMO the best on the net for showing linkages.

Does anyone have any additional leads on buying animated deer motors? Britestar wants way too much for shipping, and CWebDirect is sold out of all their motors. And I don't have time to drive all over town looking for a cheap deer to cannibalize.

I think I WILL check at CVS as there is one (or 2) close to me.

Whisper,

I have gotten all of mine at thrift stores. I am lucky enough to live in an area that has many very good thrift stores. (Or I suppose in an area that people donate good stuff!)

Also, Walgreen's has their "deer" and such on sale now- 50% off, so that makes the "motors" about $10ish now. If there is a Big-Lots near you, keep an eye on them as well.

With the economy as it is, people just are not buying this year. I especially noticed that at Halloween. Keep your eyes open for those after Christmas sales! I plan on picking up several "deer" this year so that I can stop cannibalizing my older projects only to re-do them again next year.

Sickie, it is a great idea to buy the deer and take out the motors!! Theres all kinds of things u can do with them for xmas and halloween displays. Im going to buy some after christmas !!

Sickie Ickie

edwin, you read my mind, and chris, you verbalized it. LOL

I have bought bulk from on-line before, but unless you buy 5 or more motors at once, shipping ain't worth it. You are just not saving much money. By buying walgreen's 50% off, you not only get the motor for cheaper, but a free deer with it for other projects.

Just Whisper

For sure. $8.00 for a motor isn't bad (online), but if you have to pay $10. shipping you might as well buy the whole deer on sale and, like sickie says, now you got a deer too.
