Buffalo Snow Switch Mat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/DaveNTracy/Switch%20Mat/th_002.jpg

Materials
Buffalo Snow (Cotton type material)
Thin Cardboard
Thin electrical wire
Clear Packing Tape
Electrical Tape
Aluminum Foil

Instructions:

Cut two identical pieces of thin cardboard in the shape and size you want your mat to be. I used cereal box cardboard for mine.
Then cut out a section of the Buffalo Snow the same size/shape as the cardboard pieces.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/DaveNTracy/Switch%20Mat/004.jpg

Cover one side of each cardboard piece with aluminum foil, fold it around to the back side and tape it in place with the clear packing tape. Take the section of Buffalo snow you cut earlier and use some scissors to cut out some evenly spaced holes all over it. I make the holes about the size of a Half dollar. Try to leave about a 1/2 inch border all the way around the snow piece.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/DaveNTracy/Switch%20Mat/005.jpg

Take two lengths of thin wire and strip back about 1/2 inch of insulation off of each end. Curl the ends of the two wires into a semi-circle shape.
Use some electrical tape and tape around the border edge (on top of the aluminum foil) of the aluminum foil side of ONE of the two cardboard pieces. (This keeps the top and bottom mat sections from shorting out when they are taped together in a later step.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/DaveNTracy/Switch%20Mat/010.jpg

Use some clear packing tape to tape the curled bare wire end onto the corner area of one of the foil/cardboard pieces. Tape it on the foil covered side.
Repeat this step for the other foil/cardboard piece.

Next, lay the Buffalo snow piece onto the aluminum side of one of the foil/cardboard pieces.
Place the second cardboard foil piece on top of the snow (aluminum side down), basically sandwiching the snow section between the two foil/cardboard pieces.
Tape the whole thing together around the edges using the packing tape.
I then cut out a section of a black plastic leaf bag to cover the mat on both sides. This will help to make it less noticable and also somewhat water resistant. Tape this also with the packing tape (make sure you leave the free ends of the two wires sticking outside the bag before you tape it).

Some of the best props to use with this type of mat are anything that has a "Try Me" button. A lot of the small Gemmy props have this feature. You'll notice in the picture the end of the wires on the Try Me button have a small plug that plugs into the prop for customer testing. Just cut the Try Me button off and splice the two plug wires onto the two wires coming out of your switch mat. Splice in a length of electrical wire if you want to place the mat further away from the prop. The mat itself will basically become the new "Try Me" switch.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/DaveNTracy/Switch%20Mat/007.jpg

If your prop doesn't have a Try Me button, just wire the switch mat in place of the "On" switch of the prop, whether it's a light sensor, sound sensor or momentary "on" switch. Just find the two wires going to the switch, cut them and splice them to the wires going to the switch mat. WARNING: Don't wire AC current to this mat. Electrocution could occur. Only use a battery powered prop or a similar DC powered prop only.

That's All!!

Thanks Grinch. I saw a similar version on HF last year but wasn't quite happy with the design. I like this one. Looks simple and more durable.

Thanks, Edwin and Whisper. There might be easier and better ways to make this mat, but this is how I made it. Feel free to ask any questions if any arise.

Did you use the shiny side up or the shiny side down on the aluminum foil? LOL

Does it matter if the person is a little kid or a really really fat old person who steps on the mat? ROFL!

Thanks again EG! I have been waiting for a Tut on this that is time tested and believable!

(This would also work on any AAT's "push here" button!!!) :D

On a side note: TRY to save the "try me" buttons. They come in handy! (don't throw them away!)

What can you do with the buttons edwin?

Grinch- this is AWESOME! I used corrugated and nothing between to stop shorting it out except for strips of corrugated cardboard. Yours is an excellent tutorial! Plenty of pics for even the most challenged like me to understand!

YAY!!! Thanks!

Thanks, Sickie. I'm glad it's going to be useful to you.

Edwin, you should use the side of the foil that best matches your personality. So you should use the DULL side up! LOL JK :)
It shouldn't matter whether it's a fat, old person or a little kid stepping on the mat. Fat kids, skinny kids, kids who climb on rocks---tough kids, sissy kids, even kids with chicken pox will trigger it.
WARNING: Don't try to use the mat in outer space. There's no gravity to put pressure on the mat! :(

I guess I could post this tut on Halloween Forum also.

I'm not moderator there, so I don't care if you do or not. LOL :p

And I don't hang out there much so I don't care either. LOL I already have it here. That is what counts. Right?

LOL EG!

JW, I use them in different displays. I just hook the "try me" to another AAT and add an appropriate length of wire. These are what I use in the display case at work.

I see. So I guess I would probably have no use for them. Maybe I will save any I get and mail them to you. :)

Great tutorial. I've wanted to get pre-made ones but the price always prevented it. I love the inexpensive, simple, and practical way this works!

We have a problem at the theatre with people who like to scratch their names or whatever on the mirrors in the Men's bathroom. We, (and by WE I mean ME) use a clear plastic covering similar to window tint - only clear - on the mirrors to protect the glass. It is a pain in the rear to replace the plastic covering all the time so I am going to try using your switch mat technology behind the mirror and one of those little alarms you see on TV, so that when pressure is put on the mirror the alarm will sound.

I will have to warn the cleaning people before they clean the mirrors tho... LOL

I hope it works!

Are the mirrors in front of the sink? If so it may go off every time someone washes their hands.

Just Whisper

Sickie, why would someone lean on the mirror to wash their hands? Sounds like a great idea edwin. Too bad you can't also hook up a video camera not only to catch them but to see the expression on their faces when the alarm goes off. I'd love to watch that. Good thing they will be in the bathroom, cuz I bet they piss their pants. hahahaha.

Oh! I missed the behind the mirror part. I thought it was in front of the sinks in front of the mirror. My bad.

What kind of stuff do they write on the mirrors, Edwin?
Is it kind of like the scene in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" where the guy is cleaning the fast food restaurant mirror?
Maybe you could hook an alarm AND a camera to it and have them trigger together!
Let me know if it works.

Still have to work on it EG, unfortunately you can't use cameras in the bathroom or they would have been there long long ago!

Basically they scratch graffiti on the mirrors. Alot of places don't even have mirrors anymore because it is such a problem.... Stupid Jerks!

Just replace the mirrors with some aluminum foil (shiny side out).
They probably won't notice the difference........

and on hot days you can bake cookies on them. :p

I am sure there would be enough "Natural Gas" in the Men's room to easily bake cookies.

can you bottle it for your solar heater? :p

Now back to your switch mat thread...

I've heard of "Toll House" cookies before, but never "Out-House" cookies ! :green:

are they the same as litter box cookies?

Now, how can I bring this back around to witch mats.....

Speaking of litter boxes, you could use a switch mat in front of them for kitty to step on.

*whew*

What are those? The things witches lie on when they take naps? Or what they wrestle on?
Or maybe absorbent ones for incontinent witches?
