I don't know if mine ever understood Christmas, but they sure understood the concept of "something in that wrapper smells good and I want it". Then they would tear the paper off. I think dogs like tearing paper too.

I feel they do understand christmas because of how they act when shut out of the room for wrapping. They have become accustomed to getting a load of toys on Christmas morn (some of which do not smell like a food item but only a push toy).
They get shut out of the room, my sis wraps the presents, they pace and wait anxiously outside. she hides them, then they burst in and try to find them. Every once in a while blue will skulk in and try to get one out early, then comes out with his tail between his legs like a kid when we hear him and scold him.
Then, Christmas morning they prance around the tree excited, waiting! they feel it in the air I guess, or see the other presents under the tree. We put theirs out under the tree and they wait patiently until the other presents are opened and theirs are distributed, one to each of them, then a second and third round. I think they learned by watching humans get their gifts and then open them.
then they spend all christmas day playing with their new toys.
in any case, its so cute, they understand "enough"
They have already chewed apart almost all of their new toys, btw. what dogs!
thanks I'm glad u liked the video!

you can tell by the video, that they were not co-erced or trained into the present opening. I think they learn from watching. Mrs. Santa Claus just pushes a toy into Mishka's mouth and tells her "open it, momma!" she never shows them what to do. Blue may have learned from Dolja, I think Dolja learned by watching humans. Maybe.
