Chestnut help

First time even knowing what they are. I'm lost.
What is everyone elses experience with Chestnuts?
What do they look or feel like when they are supposed to be fresh raw and then fresh roasted?
Any stories of warning to learn from?

I remember my dad taking me to Chicago and buying roasted chestnuts from a wagon vender. I didn't like them but he said he grew up with them in Penn.
