I just got my first one in the mail today. Hubby's aunt sends them instead of cards. Is it just me, or do these generic form letters bother anyone else? Seems like it's making up for not keeping in touch with people throughout the year when I get one of these letters filled with "this is what happened with us this past year" type of thing.
If anyone sends these letters, please feel free to reply and tell me why you send them instead of cards. I'd like to hear the other point of view! :)

And if I'm just being a Grinch, you can tell me that too!

First time I saw one I thought it was strange, but once I thought about it, there are lots of friends/relatives we just don't talk to/see enough during the year. Gives a quick update in a way. Makes me realize I don't talk to my friends/relatives/whoever enough to say I know how they are doing (course, the last two years were so busy, they don't know how I was doing either).

I doubt I would do one, but it would let those I haven't kept in touch with know how we are (although I would probably still put it in a Xmas card).

We have some friends and family who do this. Some we never have contact with except for that letter, other stay in touch through out the year, but just traditionally like doing the Christmas letter.

We did a sort of one last year -- but it was just a few quick paragraphs, then a bunch of pictures. I love getting these -- I send and receive so many cards, they kind of seem generic and form in themselves. I don't get to talk to some of my card people a lot, so a letter keeps me in the loop. And I figure that even if I talk to you everyday, you still would love to see my husband with a tiara on his head, or a pic of my cutie elfs.
I hope that doesn't come across as concieted or lazy -- we actually worked hard on it -- and we still stuff in in the chosen card.

Good point!

And I'd love to see anyone's husband with a tiara on his head! I like the idea of adding the pictures. None of my letter people do that.

A bit of eye shadow and lipstick,...maybe a pole...and he could do stage! :p

My mom used to do the Christmas letter. As a kid I didn't like everyone knowing what I did, but as an adult I can see why she did it. She used to make it into a poem and have lines rhyme.

Mummy-deerest- love the pic of hubby, your two little elves are adorable too!! I have a couple of people that I write a letter to, that I don't talk to or see much. I add it to the christmas card. I also add notes, written inside some cards to people that I see just some times(if that makes sense). I enjoy the letters I get back, and also enjoy the pictures that some people send. Nome are as entertaining as muumy-deerests though!

We write creative Christmas letters using a theme to make our family news fun to read rather than a boring brag letter. Sometimes we use the "10 top whatever" theme or the letter might appear to be written by the dog or maybe it will look like a Farmers' Almanac.
