Ok Group Question???? Me and Wiggy where in chat room the other night. We where talking about what is the best Liquor to put in eggnog. My reply is what I use “Jim Beam” (Yes Santa likes to get smashed on thoses romantic Christmas night with Mrs. Claus ;)) I know it can be mixed with everything under the sun but what is traditional to use and dose anyone add other stuff to change the taste like Cherry Ect? (Sorry if this has been talked about we have way too many Threads for me too look into.)

I drink my just plain. No alcohol. I've seen on another forum that some people mix it with 7-up. Sounds gross to me, but whatever floats their boats. :)

I think traditional is Rum. (?) I haven't found an alcoholic one I liked, though.

IF I ever HAD to drink eggnog it would be with a bottle of Seagrams. Of course I would drink the bottle of Seagrams FIRST, then drink the eggnog which I would promptly throw up anyway. How do you guys drink that stuff?

I find that Eggnog and Kahlua go well together. Cinnamon schnapps is also very good with eggnog.

I hate eggnog!!
I call it "Pancake Batter with Nutmeg" !

Wiggy
10-28-2009, 08:18 PM
Wow, I love eggnog! It's not Christmas without eggnog! Ok, it would still be Christmas, but still...
I've rarely had it mixed with anything, but now that I think of it, Southern Comfort makes their own brand of eggnog, so I would imagine that they intend it to be mixed with whiskey. I'm sure you can mix it with just about anything though.

As much as I like it, I don't think I've ever finished a whole carton of eggnog before it went sour though. It doesn't keep long enough and I don't drink enough of it.

Wiggy, try it with some Moon Shine and get back to us! LOL ROFL!!!

Seriously, while it does taste like pancake batter as EG stated, I don't drink enough of it either to justify purchasing a carton of it. Now, if I knew the rations of Jim Beam and Eggnog that Baltimore Santa enjoys, I may have to get me a case of the stuff! LOL

I LOVE the Southern Comfort brand! We do drink enough of it to purchase several cartons every year. It's a tradition to have a piece of pumpkin pie and a glass of eggnog while decorating the tree. I've been tempted to buy a carton now, but I'm holding back and waiting until at least the middle of November.

Deans makes a good virgin egg nog.

I know Christian Bros sells around here their brand of alc. egg nog, but I don't care for it.

xmas Lilly's hubby invented her own drink when she was active here. I've wanted to try it ever since but still haven't done so yet:

Peppermint Lilly's

1 shot glass
fill 3/4 of the shot glass with baileys white chocolate
fill to top with Sgt.peppermint ( a pink swirly design bottle)
sprinkle with powdered candy canes..you do not want chunks!! ( I used my coffee grinder to do this after smashing the candy cane)
drink up

Kind of a bummer around here. It only comes in quarts so I have to get 5 or 6 to make it threw the week. Always had it straight. Good thick and creamy!!!

The wife and I prefer "Turkey Hill Eggnog" We only have it in quarts too. We go though about 10 or so. and a whole lot of Hot Coco. Santa Loves his Coco.

I love Turkey Hill ice cream, but we don't have the eggnog here. I guess since you're closer to PA, then Turkey Hill is in more stores. I'm going to Lancaster on Black Friday, so I'll have to stop and pick up some eggnog. :)

I have to agree with Putrid here, LOVE the stuff straight out of the carton! (In fact, I intend to go looking at Safeway later today, now that you all have mentioned it!) This time of year I can't WAIT for eggnog to come out on the shelves.

On another thought, I can't WAIT to start putting up the Christmas display either! (jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the waaaaaaay!):)

Sorry guys, WAYYYYY too early in the morning on my day off!

Come to think of it, is eggnog mentioned in any Christmas carols? All I can think of is the short reference in "Grandma got ran over by a reindeer" where it mentions she'd been drinking too much eggnog.

You would think with such a staple of the holiday season, it would be mentioned in more carols.

Anywho, I can't wait to pick some up. I love it with pecan pie!

I wonder if carols predate egg nog?

putrid
11-01-2009, 11:37 AM
Seems no one really knows when it got started. Here's the Wikipedia page on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_nog

So if this article is right then it might predate Christmas carols that we'd recognize today. Back then Christmas was a drunkerd's holiday.

I used to be a rum + eggnog guy, felt traditional.

I got to where I was buying Dutch Pennsylvania Eggnog in the bottle at the liquor store. Seasonally available in most good spirit shops, and made with rum and brandy, I think.

Then I had what I consider the finest eggnog experience of my life - nonalcoholic Southern Comfort eggnog in the black carton from the grocery store.

... wow ...

I now drink only that, virgin. So good I abandoned the booze.

Wasn't EggNog one of the gifts the Three Wise Men carried to baby Jesus?
They didn't have powdered formula back then.............

As Eggnog traditionally has sugar, a New world ingredient, I doubt it's much older than the 1600s in it's present form. There was an English beverage called Posset that may be an ancestor of eggnog, and posset was around during the later Middle ages, the 14-15 centuries.

Carols as festive songs performed throughout Advent and Christmas date back to the 1100's in France.

So I feel fairly confident carols predate eggnog.

Yeah, I know, not a serious question, but I love me some Christmas history.

11-02-2009, 10:19 PM
Never made posset myself, but this might prove informative.

http://www.historicfood.com/Posset%20Recipes.htm

A couple of comments about the above - "Sack" is sack wine, usually a young red, semi-sweet, not dry.

I wouldn't worry much about sprinkling on edible musk and ambergris (or Ambergreece) at the end while serving since these items are not exactly easy to get these days.

No, I have an interest in the subject, but there are some people who are committed to researching and recreating old and ancient recipes as a career.

I just follow along as an enthusiast.

On the original topic of the thread, if you are gonna add liquor to eggnog, I recommend a dark spiced rum. It gave me the best flavor of all the usual options.
After that, I'd recommend a good brandy.

Traditionally, eggnog is mixed with spiced rum here. My family mixes it with pretty much anything http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/TJsbride/Smilies/drinkingpals.gif

My hubby and I prefer to mix it with Kahlua (I usually cut mine a bit with milk as I find it a bit rich straight out of the carton). And a friend of mine and I discovered a drink with eggnog, kahlua and rum -- yum! I tried it with vodka instead of the rum and it was very yummy too

Which automatically makes me wonder what Irish Cream, either Bailey's or Carolans, would taste like in eggnog.

I don't personally like the taste of Eggnog.

Ok, I've already gone through one carton of egg nog this week, and I just bought another today. It's the Land'o Lakes stuff that you get at wally world. It's great just as it is, but I imagine that this particular brand wouldn't mix well with anything. It's a little thick for that. Maybe some honey liquor would go good with it, but I'm digging it just the way it is. I like the virgin Southern Comfort egg nog but I haven't seen it yet this season. Maybe they'll have it out soon.
