So far, I've always given the same thing, GI Joes, but I've been thinking, do kids even play with GI Joes anymore? :)
Do you have any suggestions for something more modern? Back in my day, it was always action figures of some sort, but I'm not sure that holds true now.

I've given everything from stuffed animals to bicycles. I try to keep in mind they need stuff for infants up to teens. Baby toys, puzzles and books, dolls or action figures, educational toys, board games, play musical instruments, purses or wallets, cool belts, jewelry, jewelry boxes, cd players, watches, popular music cd's. When in doubt ask a child what is popular.

GI Joe would be a great gift this year since the movie just came out this summer!

Little nature loving kids would love that... But I'm not sure how well they would ship! Edwin, I think you might be onto something with the movie thing. I was thinking that maybe the Marvel action figures or transformers might be something to look into as well.

I do have to say that the nice thing about the action figures is that they can be pocket toys and carried around.

I don't think GI joe will ever die. Its def a classic. I usually just end up going to the store and if there is something on sale for a great price I buy it. I never know what its going to be until I find it. By the end of the shopping season, I have a huge box full of stuff for all ages for boy and girls alike. Kids love all toys, especially if they get very little at this time of year. Last year I got a dora the explorer tv and dvd player combo for something like 19 bucks. Some kid had to have been thrilled. :)

wow, Elvira, that was a great gift! I too usually wait til a good sale/clearance comes along, then I can get a nicer gift for what I can afford.
As far as the G. I. Joe, I think boys will always like those!
Chris, sounds like you support a great cause!

ON a side note here, we have been playing the Toy Story and Toy Story II double feature at the Theatre starting on Friday (this last Friday) and (it is in 3D) You should see all the kids bringing in Woody and Buzz! It is really cute!
I guess what I mean to say is, Kids like TOYS. Trucks, Cars, Dolls of some sort or another, Kids just like TOYS! TOYS are only TOOLS to teach kids. A doll teaches a kid how to be a parent. A car teaches a kid how to drive. An action figure teaches a kid how to live.
I wouldn't worry about what you donate, I would be more worried if nothing WAS donated.

I love toys for tots. It is one of the few charities I give to regularly. and they are right. any toy is a good toy if you have none to start with.
