Threw out the years I've seen more versions of this classic Christmas story than any other movie made. (With the exception of someone taking Santa's place or becoming the new Santa.} Even a few animated. And one Mupet. LOL I think the latest good one was with Patric Stewart as Scrooge. Two of my personal favorites are.
Alastair Sim (black and white version) and
George C. Scott.

And i've seen some really BAD versions as well. Most set in more modern times. Henry Wrinkler (sp?) did one called 'An American Christmas Carol.' Well done but nothing to remember. Most of the really bad ones were on Cable channels. Done with up and coming actors. A few were so bad that if you didn't already know the story you'd never been able to follow the show. LOL

Which are ya'lls favorites? Ones you don't like? Do you have VHS or DVD's of them?

For me, Alastair Sim is and always will be the real character of Scrooge.

Sure beats Bill Murrey.

I really like the version with George C. Scott. I think it's from 1984.
I meant to tape it this year, but didn't. Maybe I can find it on DVD somewhere.
I have seen the Patrick Stewart version, but I like the Scott version better.
Oh, that reminds me--when I was a kid there was a half hour animated version of "A Christmas Carol" and in it they used the original drawings from Charles Dickens as a model for the animated characters. I remember it was REALLY creepy and I loved watching it. But I haven't seen it since.
Does anybody remember that one?

putrid

Yep I remember that one EnlightendGrinch. Totally cool. But like you I haven't seen it in years. There's a hand full of animated versions for sale on Half.com. Weather or not that one is in the lot is anyone's guess. You might be able to get a copy of the Scott version there as well. I got a VHS of it over the summer cuz I still don't have a DVD player. Gust can't seem to catch up with all this new technology. LOL

If everything goes back to VHS I'll be techo-correct again! LOL In the 70's they offered albums on real to real. ( for those of ya'll that don't know. Real to real is a 10 1/2 inch wheel of tape. Kinda like a movie real. The tape itself was wider. This meant more magnetic information and a better sound quality. Digital has NEVER come close to matching this format.) Most folks didn't own a real to real tape deck. They also offered really thick albums. I forget what they were called. "Vurgen pressing"? Something like that. A lot more expensive that a regular one. Most of these were used in radio stations. They held up better and could handle the constant playing.

There is one or two old black and white versions I haven't seen in years and wold like to have copies of. I'm not sure, this reference may be to the same version. Cratchet gets fired for knocking Scrooge's hat off with a snow ball.
Either a different version or happens in the same one. Scrooge confronts his house maid on the stairs shortly after being reformed. All I can remember is she says something like this.
"Thank you sir, in keeping with the situation!"

Sickie Ickie
01-02-2009, 10:40 AM
Same one. It's in Alastair's version.

putrid
01-02-2009, 12:20 PM
I have Alastair's version. Have to watch it again. But I'm almost positive Cratchet doesn't get fired in that version.

There is also a version where Scrooge brings toys to the Cratchet's home. But I don't remember if it's in black and white or color.

And by the way Sickie Ickie, I agree with ya on Bill Murrey's "Scrooged". It would have been a hit if the entire show was as funny as there version of the ghost of Christmas past.

01-02-2009, 10:08 PM
Your totally right Sickie Ickie. The Alastair's version is the one with Scrooge and his house maid on the stairs.

No need to doubt yourself. I can go back and read the same book in a few years and it's all new to me. LOL Still looking for the one where Crachet gets fired for knocking Scrooge's hat off.

I saw part of a black and white one this year where Tiny Tim was almost as tall as Bob Cratchet himself.

I love the story and haven't really hated a version yet.

The Sim version is good, but a bit dated for me now. Absolutely LOVE the George C Scott version (which is available here). Also think that the Patrick Stewart version is great. Scrooged is awesome!

But one that has not yet been mentioned is the all time classic: Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol. No joke, this is probably my favorite. Like the music, like the way it's played out... just like everything about it.

And I'm 36, before anyone thinks I'm 10 or something! LOL

If you have not seen the Magoo version, buy it immediately. I'm sure you'll find it for a very good price now that Christmas is over. Best Buy, Walmart, etc all have it in stock usually.

I pretty much love all versions even the bad ones, it is my fav story line of all time, I too loved the magoo version, they had a mickey mouse verison too. but the allistar . scott and stewart versions are the best, i have read the book several times, own it in fact,
I wonder what carrey will do with it, hopefully not too over the top!

Sickie Ickie

naaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh He'll play it subtly like Murray did in Scrooged. :p

The Mask as the ghost of Christmas past.
Ace Ventura as the ghost of Christmas presant.
And the Grinch as the ghost of Christmas future.

Na, Jim Carrey was never over the top. LOL

Guess I'll start the hunt again for the Magoo version of A Christmas Carol. It'll have to be on VHS. I still don't have a DVD player. I"m an old fart. I gota hang on to technology I understand. LOL

What about ''The Muppet Christmas Carol'' . I adore that version. The Muppets are awesome and Michael Caine is by far the best choice for Scrooge..

I agree with all of you, about the version of 1951 with A. Sim.

I also like the movie with Albert Finney as Scrooge, actually I grew up with it!

Finally, I suggest the ''Blackadder's Christmas Carol'' with Mr. Bean. A different, funny version of the story, with Mr. Bean..

I believe the version where Cratchit is fired for knocking Scrooge's hat off with a snowball is the 1938 with Reginald Owen.

I have many, many versions on video...from the great (Alastair Sim '51) to the awful (a TV version from the '50s with Basil Rathbone playing Marley's Ghost like Frankenstein's monster).

I haven't seen the '38 version in years, but am going to give it another look. It is far from my favorite, but still....

They're both good, in my opinion, though bear in mind that the Stewart version was made for TV a decade ago, so don't expect the effects and overall production to quite be theatrical quality.

Personally, I like the Sim, Stewart, Scott, Carrey and Muppet versions.

the tim curry version is an animated version with the voices of tim curry, whoopi goldberg, michael york, and ed asner. it was okay as far as animated goes. it was better than the cartoon version, a Christmas carol with no one special named.

I remember loving Mickey's Christmas Carol when I was a kid, but it's been years since I last saw it. The last time I actually REMEMBER seeing it, I was about 5 years old.

I've heard of the Vincent Price version. Let us know what you think. Seems I remember hearing that it wasn't great.

The '38 version is okay, but far less faithful to the book than many other versions have been. But many people love it and Rybcon and I have been back and forth about it. I'm sure he'll chime in on it any minute now.

More often than not, I don't personally think musicals translate well to film. Though I do think they can be great live. I've seen Phantom of the Opera three times in three cities.

I've never been able to watch the Albert Finney version of ACC because of it's musical qualities as well as what I understand to be a scene near the end where Scrooge goes to hell. Goes to hell? Really? I really feel like no one deserves such a fate, including miserly Scrooge, and considering that's a detail that's nowhere in the book, I will just steer clear.

But I am always curious about alternative versions of ACC.

But I wont admit to that last one to just anybody...LOL

I've actually only seen a few myself. Mostly, I just REALLY loved Phantom of the Opera when I first saw it at 14 years old.

The only musical that I've seen in movie form that I liked was Nine, and I think that's largely because as much of the dialogue is spoken as it is sung. Usually the musical numbers just annoy me. Once they break out into song and start dancing I'm like, "Ugh, not this $#!^ again!!!"

I'm not sure if you're specifically referring to Christmas forums, but I HAVE heard that on other such forums--none of which I have ever visited personally--that if you don't think/speak/act/feel/believe exactly like everyone else then you are mercilessly attacked. So yeah, it's definitely a plus to be able to say what's on your mind and it be all good in the hood.

Unfortunately I belong to a very large guitar forum with trolls that seem to post more than play. Apparently according to them there's only one right way to do anything/ their way. (this is way off topic so there's no reason to read this to follow the subject of this thread)

A good example of this is when this kid put up a post asking if a piece of equipment will help his cheap guitar amp sound better. The true and most obvious answer is 'Yes". Some really helpful members told him that. Then this guy got posts telling him is wasting his money. What he needs is to buy a better guitar amplifier (spend $2500 instead of $300.) So being me I posted telling the kid if he likes the piece of equipment then he should buy it. His sound will be better. Then I get hounded. Something like 'if you buy equipment that's more expensive than your amp your doing it wrong'. So I being me ( a smart a..) posted something like," I'll plug my 'very expensive piece of equipment' into my very cheap amp and be wrong all night long. And sound good doing it'. Ya, that went over like a lead balloon. LOL I could give you MANY examples of opinionated self righteous trolls in forums I've belonged to. I still belong to that guitar forum. Despite the trolls I get great help and advice from a lot of really good people. And I ignore the trolls when they post answers to my threads.

I hear you.

I'm actually a moderator on a mixed martial arts forum and we tend to keep a small and somewhat exclusive crowd around. I find that the bigger the forum, the greater the number of trolls. In a small environment like that, or like we have here at CFC, it's pretty easy to weed out the trolls pretty quickly and keep the quality of posters at a relatively high level. That's why, as a rule, I prefer smaller, more intimate forums to the big mega-forums that have thousands of members.

i like musicals. i am not a fan of operas, but if i saw one live i think i would love it.
my dvd is fickle. sometimes it works, sometimes it won't. i finaly got it to work, and i watched tcc with vincent price. he narrates the tale. they get the whole thing done in about a half an hour. the marley ghost is just a guy with chains around him saying his piece. all the ghosts just have minemal costumes on. and they all just speak their parts. there's no flare, no drama, no intricate details. the last ghost is wearing a black hooded cape with a partial black cloth face mask. scrooge says, ghost i fear you most, and i'm thinking, oh look a ninja. lol. then scrooge rushes out to redeem himself and he goes to cratchets house and everyone is there and it's real fast repenting with all. it's in black and white. because i like the show so much, i liked this version as well. BUT, if i had watched this as my very first carol, there probably wouldn't have been another. i guess i owe a big thank you to george c scotts version. it's all that use to play around here. and it's very good. but now it's been years since it played.

It's not so much about hvaing a different view point. It's about you present it. Most things come down to personal opinion and in that everyone is right.

Back on topic. I've always had great access to theater (for you older folks that's how I met Barbi Benton and Barry Williams) and have always enjoyed musicals. College productions of Godspell, Celebration, Little Shop of Horrors. Professional productions of A Chorus Line, Annie, etc. Theater musicals have an energy that doesn't always translate well to the screen.

i like musicals. i am not a fan of operas, but if i saw one live i think i would love it.
my dvd is fickle. sometimes it works, sometimes it won't. i finaly got it to work, and i watched tcc with vincent price. he narrates the tale. they get the whole thing done in about a half an hour. the marley ghost is just a guy with chains around him saying his piece. all the ghosts just have minemal costumes on. and they all just speak their parts. there's no flare, no drama, no intricate details. the last ghost is wearing a black hooded cape with a partial black cloth face mask. scrooge says, ghost i fear you most, and i'm thinking, oh look a ninja. lol. then scrooge rushes out to redeem himself and he goes to cratchets house and everyone is there and it's real fast repenting with all. it's in black and white. because i like the show so much, i liked this version as well. BUT, if i had watched this as my very first carol, there probably wouldn't have been another. i guess i owe a big thank you to george c scotts version. it's all that use to play around here. and it's very good. but now it's been years since it played.

Sounds lame.

There are still a few versions I'd like to check out--the '35 version sounds interesting from a historical perspective, the Magoo version gets a lot of praise, the Finney version I have addressed already but I should probably sit down to watch it anyway, and for some reason I'm oddly curious about the Kelsey Grammer version that few people seem to even be aware of.

All in all though, I'm pretty sure that I've seen all the good ones.

I agree. Watching a movie of a musical is just not the same as actually being there in the crowd with the live performers only tens of feet away from you. In that environment, it's difficult not to get caught up in the action.

wow, I almost forgot about the Kelsey Grammer one, I saw it,, but not in a long time, they actually don't run very many of them any more, haven't seen the old Mr. Magoo one is a really long time,,,,,,
I didn't care for the musical one,,, I watched a bit of it but that was all,, of course I wasn't feeling well so that probably didn't help, but some things just don't belong as musicals,,,
I saw Phantom of the Opera in Toronto several years ago,,,, absolutely brilliant,,,, loved it ,,,, I agree, in person is much better,

Halorene, One with Vincent Price? Now there's one I don't think I've seen. But only a half hour long? Does sound like they would have to rush threw it. Still be cool to see!

putrid, i liked it. just not the best. but better than a cartoon one i have. i was in walmart tonight, they had the jim carry one. $19.99 was just a little high for me. but another i would like to see. i went to a little theater play when i lived in wyoming. they put this on and of course i went. they did a fantastic job. i still remember scrooge cowering under the covers shivering.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but I'll offer my opinion. I have two favorite versions of A Christmas Carol.

Out of pure nostalgia and because it's a decent version anyway (if you take away the songs that are way too long it would be awesome) is A Muppet Christmas Carol. Gonzo and the Rat's narration is really funny and Michael Cain plays Scrooge straight and it really works.

But if you're going with a more straight-forward and serious favorite, for me it has to be the version with Patrick Stewart. Perfectly done. I always think I'm going to be bored out of my mind when I put it on and it's so engaging it always sucks me in! :)

Speaking of live theatre....my wife and kids used to go to Minneapolis every year to see the Guthrie Theatre's performance of A Christmas Carol. Highly recommended to anyone who has a chance to attend. We haven't been back in years...but hope to resume the tradition again one day.

I just this past week was finally able to see the Alastair Sim version.
I'll have to agree it is the best version of "A Christmas Carol" that I've seen.

I still do like the George C. Scott and the Jim Carrey versions as seconds.

okay you guys, this is one of my favorite movies. the only movie i snatch up every version i can. so here goes-i have-[an american Christmas carol with henry winkler] [scrooged with bill murray] [the family classic scrooge with sir seymour hicks] [brer rabbit's Christmas carol] [a Christmas carol with reginald owen] [a Christmas carol with alastair sim] [a Christmas carol with tim curry] [the muppet Christmas carol] [a Christmas carol with no one special listed] [mickey's Christmas carol] [a Christmas carol with vincent price] [veggie tales an Easter carol] [ghosts of girlfriends past]
i would love to get the george c scott one. my favorite that i own is scrooged. and then i would probably pick the muppets. there's some pretty cool ghosts in that one. i love seeing all the different versions of ghosts. then it's a toss up between alastair sims and henry winkler. bethene, what did you think of the jim carrey version?
the tim curry version is an animated version with the voices of tim curry, whoopi goldberg, michael york, and ed asner. it was okay as far as animated goes. it was better than the cartoon version, a Christmas carol with no one special named.
so i picked up...mr magoo's Christmas carol. i don't usually care for mr magoo, but i got to say, i thought this version was real cute. i did indeed injoy it.
i don't know if i've seen the 1938 version.

I don't know if this version has been mentioned yet, but I just saw a 1970 musical(?) version of "A Christmas Carol" called "Scrooge".
It was pretty bad, in my opinion. Albert Finney plays Scrooge, and not very well I might add. First, he was WAY too young for the part (his make-up didn't make him look much older) and he can't sing at all, so why is he in a musical??
Luckily, there really weren't that many songs to suffer through and most of them were short anyway.
The dumbest scene was the ending where Scrooge actually buys a Santa outfit and wears it while dancing and singing through the streets. Hoo-boy!

I happened upon it as Scrooge got out of bed after his night of ghosting. I left it on longer than necessary trying to comprehend the horror (or was it amusement?) of what I was seeing.
