Thinking of Ralphie say that getting his Red Rider BB gun was the best gift he had ever, or would ever get, inspired this thread.

What is the most special or favorite gift you have ever received and why?

Way back when... I got my first real stereo. The Empire Strikes Back had come out that year. My dad set up the stereo in the living room downstairs and plugged it into a timer with the soundtrack from the movie on the turntable. About 5:00 a.m. the stereo comes on, full blast, with the sound of the empirial walkers rattling the windows! That is my most memorible gift. My dad was really great at surprise gifts. One year, sometime during the night, he attached a wrought iron chandelier, that my mom had wanted, to the fire place. When we got up Christmas morning we all went to get our stockings and there was the chandelier. My mom was shocked , we have that one on film.

My favorite gift from my wife was my baby boy. :)

My favorite Christmas gift, now I'll have to give that one some thought.

Okay, this isn't a big gift, but I can't ever get it out of my head b/c of my curious nature. ;)
One christmas when I was a kid, I ran down the steps, and was looking at all of the gifts until mom and dad got there. (orders not to open til they arrived) Well, I saw near the door this little mouse. It was almost like a cat toy -- wasn't stuffed, but seemed like it had a cardboard-like body that was empty inside with realistic fur outside. It had a little dress on, too. Was only three or four inches. I asked if it was a present, and M & D said they didn't know where it came from. No note from Santa. It was a mystery present, and I never found out where it came from. Til this day, no one claims responsibility. I loved/love that. It wasn't anything special, but it was so mysterious and interesting that I will never forget it. :)

One year my kid brother asked for a TV for his room. After all the gifts were opened, my dad left the room came back with tv box, my brother says "all right!", but dad kept walking, and handed it to me. Then he went back and got my brothers. I'll never forget the look on my brothers face, or for that matter, the surprise for me, ( I didn't ask for or expected one). That was great. But honestly the one of the biggest surprises I remember the most wasn't for me. For my brother yet again, he wanted a train set. After all the presents were opened , no train. After stuffing the wrappings in a box, mom told him to bring the box to the basement. All of a suden, he yelled. My dad had set up a whole train village on a ping pong sized table, with houses, trees, mountain, and the track all laid out. The funny thing is, as I laid awake, unable to sleep, (Christmas eve and all you know), I heard my dad and uncle setting it up in the basement, I just couldn't figure out what all was going on, I just knew something was. That memory is as clear as a bell for me, and is was some 40 odd years ago. My parents did great things like that for us. Those were some big shoes to fill when I had my own kids.!

I'm going to cheat a little since this wasn't something I gave but something I received. It was one of our first Christmases in the States after moving here from Canada. My brother wanted this leather jacket. I mean, he REALLY wanted it. It was the one thing he asked my parents for that year. I had gone shopping at some outlet malls with some friends and right there in front of me was the very same jacket he was asking my parents for. So I bought it - it was on clearance at the outlet mall and I think I got it for about $60.00. More than my brother and I spend on each other but I just couldn't help it. It was $150.00 at the mall where he had seen it. On Christmas morning he tore into any box from my parents that looked like it could hold a jacket and I could tell at the end that he was disappointed. So I pulled my wrapped box out from behind the tree and gave it to him. The look on his face when he opened it is something I will never forget. He was so shocked that it came from me. He still talks about that Christmas to this day.

One of my favorite presents I've gotten is from my aunt. It's a huge, black, leather photo album! I'm really into photography, and it might not seem like much, but it really means a lot to me.

For me it was Christmas five years ago.

I absolutely adore crystal. Since before we were married, I had been eyeing up a Lalique perfume bottle. Anytime we were in a department store that carried Lalique, I'd wander over and admire it. At $375, it was never something that we could really justify.

Then my dad passed away November of 2002. I was so depressed became this came less than two years after my grandfather (who raised me) passed away. We were living in England at the time and it was hard being so far away.

That Christmas, Tony surprised me with the Lalique perfume bottle. I love that piece of crystal. It sits in on my vanity table in the bedroom and makes me smile every day when I think of my dad and how wonderful and caring my husband is.

I had to have immediate knee surgery due to a street bike accident last year and on December 21st I had a 4 hr knee surgery. Due to the surgery I was pretty much going to be bed ridden for at least 3 weeks I knew I would miss Christmas this year (gathering of friends, parties, shopping...etc) and I got really depressed as its my favorite Holiday. So, with out my knowledge my girlfriend set it up to where all my family and close friends came over x-mas eve night to surprise me with a great Christmas.

How the surprise played out....

She helped me out of bed and put me in my wheel chair and as she opened the front door to the house (to take me outside) I noticed she didn't turn on the x-mas lights and I was all pissed off at her. Well, as she gets me into the middle of the yard all of a sudden its starts snowing. I'm in Southern Cali, never has snowed her and all of a sudden BOOM...all the lights come on and there standing is my family and friends.

By FAR the BEST x-mas ever!! Sorry, didn't mean to type so much but its still gets to me.

My first electric train set, when I was 6. I'll always remember the fun I had setting it up and playing with it for hours at a time. I still play with trains, 54 years later.

I can't say one single gift as the greatest because even to this day I'll get gifts that I, at current age, will find more appealing than any gift I've recieved in the past, but I can say for certain that 1997 was the best Christmas Year for me that I can remember. It just seemed like I wanted a lot and I basically got it all.

A few of those gifts: One of those electric train sets, a keyboard, a telescope, and me and my brothers got the first playstation (I think it was this year we got it). The playstation was a big improvements over the NES which we were used to so that was pretty exciting.

Actually, somewhere we have a vhs tape of this christmas (my dad records every christmas, even to this day) and my older brother about has a heart attack he is so excited to get the playstation.

The year was 1988 and the gift was an original Nintendo. It was a gift worth giving as I still play it today 22yrs later :) My parents werent rich but that year they spoiled me with a Nintendo instead of the typical socks and Ninja Turtles. I can still remember hooking it up to the antenna on the console TV and playing until 3AM.

My favorite gift of ALL time? (this is going to take a bit of background information, so please, bear with me.)

2 weeks after I was born, my proud father took me for a horseback ride on his mare, Flame. (We have ALWAYS been a horse loving family) I was born in September of 1957. The following spring, Flame gave birth to a colt that Dad named Scotty.

We had Scotty in our family till the day he died 28 years later. The best gift I have EVER received was a huge portrait of my hero (my father) riding my all time favorite horse (Scotty) This was a few years after Scotty had died. You can't imagine how much it meant to me to have a picture of my proud father (replete with his signature cowboy hat) astride the horse who taught me so much as a youngster.

Bless you Scotty, where EVER you are!:):):)

I can't say the best gift... cause I really enjoy gifts from all of people which are very important for me :).
The smaller gift can be one of my favourite when I know that someone had been thinking about me when he bought/made it :deer:.

Oh such wonderful stories.... One of my favorite things was a flexible flyer sled. My Dad would take us to Prospect Park so we could sled down the hills all day, then come home soaking wet. I bet my Mom loved those days too.

That would be an awesome gift! I wouldn't mind having an original Street Fighter II machine. Easily the most important arcade game of my past. NBA Jam, Lethal Enforcers, House of the Dead 2, even Mortal Kombat. . . Psshh! Those are nothing in comparison!

My best gift would probably have to be the CD player my dad put in my car when I was . . . oh, I don't remember exactly. Probably 19 or so. I had to roll for several months without a stereo and it was great to finally have some music. That was almost 10 years ago and since then there really hasn't been much in the way of presents. These days it's pretty much just money.

Of course that counts!

I love romantic stories about proposals....I don't have one of those either and I've been married three times.
